Canada Day and Family

“Are you sure you want to go to my parents’ place?” Joel asked Kira. “They will understand if you tell them that you would rather stay home.”

“No, I want to go,” she replied. “Besides, everyone is dying to see the baby.”

“I guess so and it’s Canada Day today.”

“Yes, we usually spend Canada Day with family although last year we didn’t see Matt or Melania.”

“Matt was going through a rough time and Melania wanted to spend it solo. This time, though, she and Tanner will be spending it together while Matt and Cam are spending it with Gina. So, it will be just you, me, baby Matthew, Marilyn, Sean and their kids.”

“It won’t be the same without Matt and Cam but I’m glad they are spending it with Gina. It was good seeing the three of them visited last night. I think Gina’s smitten with Matthew. Did you see the way she was looking at him as she held him in her arms?”

“Yes, I did.”

“I think she was probably thinking of the baby she lost.”

“I think you’re right. And Matt was probably thinking about it too.”

“Cam was so excited to have a little cousin. It was so cute when he kissed Matthew on his cheek.”

Joel smiled. “Yes, it was. I’m happy I took pictures of them and of Matt holding his nephew.”

“How is Matt?”

“He’s doing fine.”

“Does he mention Mel at all?”

“No, he doesn’t. He mentioned running into Anna a couple of times.”

“Who’s Anna?”

“She’s the receptionist who used to work for Gina’s doctor until he fired her for spilling the beans about the miscarriage to Matt.”

“Oh, yes, I remember now. Poor woman. I hope she has found another job.”

“Yes, she’s a Crafts Seller and sells the stuff she makes on Etsy.”

“Good for her. Do you think Matt and she will see more of each other?”

“I don’t know. The last time they saw each other, they went to a café and bistro on Yonge Street. I’ve forgotten the name of it.”

“Well, I hope we get to meet Anna one of these days.”

“I’m not sure if Matt is interested in dating anyone and as you pointed out, even if he meets someone, he wouldn’t be able to marry her because although he’s divorced, according to the Bible, he’s still Gina’s husband.”

“Yes and that’s very unfortunate. He will have to remain unmarried for the rest of his life unless…”

“Unless what? Unless Gina dies?”

“No. Unless, they decide to reconcile.”

“Matt and Gina reconcile?”

“Anything is possible.”

“Yes, but there is so much unpleasant history between them. She kept her miscarriage from Matt and she made him unhappy.”

“Maybe if they go for counseling.”

“I don’t know.”

“Gina seemed different the last time I saw her.”

“Different in what way?”

“She was pleasant and she seemed genuinely interested in how I’m doing. When I was in the bedroom breastfeeding, she came in and sat on the chair by the window. We had a nice chat. She told me what it was like for her when she had Cam and I could tell that she loved being a mother. She’s a good mother regardless of what she has done and Cam adores her.”

“Yes, I agree with you that Gina’s a good mother but as a wife–well…”

“Gina made mistakes which cost her her marriage but it’s not hopeless. I’ve heard of many divorced couples who realize that they are still in love and they remarry.”

“But, what about Matt’s feelings for Mel?”

“I think Matt turned to Mel because he wasn’t getting what he needed from Gina. If things had been different between them, Mel would not have been in the picture at all.”

“Do you really think so?”

“Yes. If Matt and Mel had gotten together, it wouldn’t have lasted. She would ended up with Tanner.”

“What about Gina? She doesn’t love Matt, does she?”

“I don’t know. She was jealous of Mel because of him, not Tanner. The only reason why she got together with Tanner was to spite Mel for breaking up her marriage.”

“But, Mel didn’t break up their marriage. Gina’s lies did.”

“Yes, I know but as far as she as concerned, if it weren’t for Mel, she and Matt would still be together. She regrets not going for marriage counseling when he wanted them to. She admitted to me that if she had been a better wife, things would not have deteriorated between them and it was her selfish pride which made her refuse to go with him for counseling. She shared a lot of things with me, things I don’t think she has shared with anyone, not even Natalie or her mother. When she was done, I prayed for her and then, I let her hold Matthew after I was done feeding and burping him. I can honestly say that Gina and became friends from that moment on.”

“That’s good. Maybe your goodness will rub off on her. As far as Matt and her getting back together, I can’t see that happening.”

“Well, it was just a thought.” Kira yawned and closed her book. She leaned over and rested her head on her arm.

“You look tired. Are you sure you wouldn’t prefer to stay home and just veg? I’ll take care of our little guy. All you have to do is feed him.”

“Thanks, Honey but I don’t want to spend Canada Day at home. I’ll just take a nap and I’ll be refreshed.”

“All right. I’ll be right back.” He left the room to check on the baby who was fast asleep. When he returned to the den, Kira was also fast asleep. Smiling, he walked over to the desk and carefully, took her up in his arms and carried her over to the sofa.

After he laid her down, he went and got a blanket to cover her with. He went back over to the desk and picked up the book she was reading. It was My Book of Bible Promises. He took it into the living-room where he sat reading it. Five hours later, they were on their way to his parents’ house.
