Kira Visits Melania

Melania was lying in bed, thinking about the hurt expression on Tanner’s face when she told him that they couldn’t see each other any more and poor Matt who was devastated when she told him that she was still in love with Tanner.

What a total mess her life had become. She had said goodbye to the man she loved so that she could stay with the man she didn’t love because she didn’t want to hurt him. And now, they were both out of her life. Matt had decided that he was better off alone and Tanner was with Gina. Tonight they were going out for dinner and dancing. And Gina had insinuated that more might transpire between them when they went to her place for a nightcap. Pain and jealousy ripped through Melania as she imagined them in bed together.

Was it too late to go to Tanner and tell him that she had made another terrible mistake and that she wanted him in her life? What would he say? Would he tell her that she only wanted to be with him because Matt had walked out of her life? Would he think that she was on the rebound? As far as he was concerned she loved Matt, not him and that couldn’t be farther from the truth. She loved Matt, yes, but she wasn’t in love with him. She was in love with Tanner but he was with Gina, the woman she despised.

The phone rang. She sat up and stared at it, bitterly disappointed when she looked at the display and saw that it wasn’t Tanner. What did you expect? she chided herself. You made it painfully clear that you didn’t want to see him anymore. The caller was her Aunt Kira. Sighing heavily, she answered the call. “Hello, Aunt Kira.”

“Hello, Mel. I’m in the area and thought that I might drop by and see you. I hope you don’t mind.”

“No, I don’t mind.”

“All right. I’ll be there in about ten minutes.”

Ten minutes later, Kira was in Melania’s apartment. They hugged and then went into the living-room. After they sat down on the sofa, Kira said, “I heard about Matt and you.”

“I guess Matt told you.”

“He called and told Joel and Joel told me. Is it true about Tanner?”

“Why didn’t you ever tell me that you and he knew each other?”

“I told you that I worked as an intern at the company where he worked.”

“Yes, but you didn’t mention that it was more than a working relationship. How long had you and he been in a relationship?”

“For two years.”

“And then, you broke up?”

“Yes. Did Matt tell Uncle Joel why Tanner and I broke up?”

“Yes. You thought you were pregnant. Oh, Mel. Why didn’t you tell me about this and about Tanner?”

“I wanted to forget. I wanted to get over him because I thought he had moved on. After I graduated, I came to Canada to start a new life.”

“And you met Matt.”

“I once said that you were infatuated with him but you insisted that you were in love with him. Did you fall out of love with him?”

“I was wrong about that, Aunt Kira. I wasn’t in love with Matt. I wanted to be but I wasn’t. There was only one man whom I could ever love and he broke my heart.”

“Tanner broke your heart?”

“Yes. I was sorry that I had broken up with him and went to see him to tell him that I wanted to get back together with him. I saw him in the mall but he wasn’t alone. When I saw him with that other woman. I wanted to die.”

“Oh, Mel.” Kira sighed.

“And now, he’s with another woman–Gina. It kills me that he’s with her.”

“You said you love him.”

“I do, Aunt Kira. I love him so much that it hurts.” Melania’s voice broke. “What am I going to do?”

“Fight for him.”

“Fight for him?”

“Yes. Sometimes we have to fight for what we really want.”

“I hope it isn’t too late.”

“It won’t be too late if you and he are meant to be.”

Melania hoped with all her heart that her aunt was right.
