Gina Visits Matt

Matt was looking out of the window. It was Wednesday night just after nine. He had put Cam to bed an hour earlier. He had just finished working out in the den which he had set up as a gym. He took a quick shower and fixed himself a cup of Chamomile Tea. As he drank it, he went over to the window and looked out.

After he finished his tea, he was going to call Melania and make plans to see her over the weekend. He still couldn’t get over the feeling that something was up with her, though. He felt it when they were at Natalie’s cocktail party last month. She had been unusually quiet when they left the party and he was taking her home. He had asked her what was wrong and she had said that she was tired. He left it at that. He walked her to her door, they kissed and then, he left.

The doorbell rang. Frowning, he put his cup down and went to see who it was. When he saw that it was Gina, he opened the door. “Gina? What are you doing here?” he asked.

“I need to talk to you.”

“All right. Come in. Excuse me while I go and put on a shirt. The living-room is through there,” he said, pointing. While she went there, he went to the bedroom to pull on a tee shirt, wondering what she needed to talk to him now and why it couldn’t wait until tomorrow.

She was standing by the window when he joined her. “I couldn’t let another day go by without telling you something that I feel you should know about.”

“What is it?”

“It concerns Melania.”

“What about Mel?”

“Has she told you anything about Tanner?”

“Graham’s cousin?”

“Well, she said that Tanner worked at the same company where she was an intern. She mentioned that they had bumped into each other at Yorkdale and she called me when they were going out for lunch.”

“Is that all she told you about him?”

“Yes. Why?”

“Matt, I don’t know how to tell you this.”

“Tell me what, Gina?”

“That Mel and Tanner have a history–and I don’t mean just a working history.”

“What exactly do you mean, Gina?”

“Tanner and Melania dated each other when they were both living in New York.”

“How do you know this?”

“I was in his office the other day and I happened to see a photo of them together. It was a selfie of them in a hot tub.”

“And how did you happen to see this photo?”

“It was in his desk drawer. He wasn’t there so, I wanted to leave him a note letting him know that I had stopped by and that’s when I saw the photo.”

“It could have been totally innocent.”

“She had her arms around his neck and was kissing him while he was taking the photo.”

“That was in the past, Gina. Tanner’s with you now and Mel’s with me. They’re just friends.”

“Is that what she told you–that they’re just friends?”

“No, she didn’t tell me that but it’s what I believe.”

“All right. How do you explain this?” Gina took out her cell phone and flipped through a couple of screens until she found what she was looking for. She handed Matt the phone.

He found himself looking at a photo of Melania. She was squatting in a black close fitting dress and high heel sandals, looking over her shoulder. “This was taken in her living-room. Where did you get this?”

“It was on Tanner’s computer. He had it as his wallpaper. He must have taken it which means that he was at her place.”

Matt handed the cell back to Gina. “Having a photo as a wallpaper doesn’t mean that they are more than friends.”

Gina took it and after deleting the photo, she put the phone back into her handbag. “When we were at the cocktail party, didn’t you notice how she was acting?”

“She seemed a bit distracted.”

“That was because she was jealous.”

“Jealous? Because I wanted to have a word with you?”

“No, Matt. She wasn’t jealous of you and me. She was jealous of Tanner and me.”

“Tanner and you?”

“Yes. She hated seeing us together. I saw her watching us, especially him. Didn’t you notice that later in the evening, they were both gone for a while?”

“Mel went to the washroom and I saw Tanner with you.”

“Yes, but he left for a while and shortly after she came back from wherever she went, he showed up. I think that they were together. Matt, open your eyes. There’s something going on between them. Don’t let Melania fool you. Even though she’s with you, it’s Tanner she really wants to be with.”

Matt’s expression darkened. “Maybe Tanner’s attracted to Mel and you’re maligning her because you’re jealous.”

“They’re attracted to each other, Matt. I’ve seen them together and I’ve seen the way they look at each other. Did she tell you that while Natalie and I were playing tennis at Bayview Village park, she and Tanner went for a walk?”

“No, she didn’t but I’m sure it’s not what you’re insinuating.”

“Prove me wrong then. Ask her about Tanner. Do it in person so that you can tell if she’s lying to you or not.”

“Gina, I think you’d better leave now.”

“I’ll go. I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I thought you ought to know what your girlfriend has been up to. Don’t bother seeing me out, I’ll see myself out. Goodnight, Matt. Please give Cam a hug and kiss for me.” She turned and walked out of the living-room.

Matt stood there, his mind reeling. He heard the door close behind Gina and then, there was silence. Only the ticking of the clock on the wall could be heard. Why did Gina have to come here tonight and turn his world upside down? He knew she hadn’t done it because she gave a damn about him. She did it because she wanted to get even with Melania. She still blamed her for the divorce.

But, was what she had said true, though? Was there something going on between Melania and Tanner? Why hadn’t Melania mentioned running into Tanner at Bayview Village park and going for a walk with him? It was true he had noticed that she hadn’t been herself lately and how distracted she had been when they were at the cocktail party. Was Tanner the reason for her sudden change in behavior? Did she still have feelings him? And what about the photo he had in his desk drawer of them in the hot tub or the wallpaper on his computer of her in her apartment? It was obvious that they had been lovers in the past but was there something going on between them now?

He dragged his fingers through his hair. There was only one way to find out. In the morning, he would call Melania and arrange to meet her tomorrow evening so that he could talk to her. He hoped with all of his heart that Gina was wrong.
