In London

“So, how does it feel to be back in London?” Avianna asked Max. They had arrived the day before and were in their Modern, bright and spacious new apartment in Kensington. They bought it soon after Max was hired to be the personal physician of the Duke of Ruthorham and his family. Gordon, a friend of Max’s had been taking care of it for them. A week later, it was fully furnished.

“Great!” It felt great to be back in the big city and relaxing on the sofa, reading the newspaper for a change. Back in Johannesburg, he would be at the hospital, tending to several patients or making house calls.

“It’s good to have you home for a change,” Avianna said. “For the first time in years, we’ve been having our meals together. I love it.”

“Yes, I’ve to get used to these changes.”

“I hope you don’t get bored.”

“Back in Johannesburg, I didn’t have time to be bored.”

“Right now, I would be here on my own, trying to do something to pass the time.”

“When you weren’t busy with organizing events, luncheons, community work or raising awareness about an issue close to your heart. Whatever are you going to do with yourself here in London?”

“Don’t you worry about me, my Darling. I will find something worthwhile to do with my time. For now, though, I just want to take a break. I want to do regular things like shopping, going out for tea, reading and exploring Kensington.”

“Well, there’s lots to see here in Kensington.”

“Yes, I know. There are the Victoria and Albert, Natural History and Science museums, Holland park, Kensington Gardens, Royal Albert Hall, to mention a few.”

“And you can shop at Knightsbridge.”

“And afterwards, I may visit the Saatchi Gallery.”

“Perhaps you can wear your Saatchi watch when you visit the gallery.”

Avianna threw a cushion at him. “Very funny. You and I both know that the Saatchi Gallery has nothing whatsoever to do with Saatchi jewelry.”

“A lot of people I know think that it does until I clear up that confusion.”

“So, what will you do with yourself when I am out and about?”

“I’ll be right here, relaxing.”

“Why don’t you come with me?”

“I’ve been to all of those places you’ve mentioned. No, I’d much rather stay here and read.”

“All right. I think I’ll go out for a bit now. I’ll be back for us to have lunch.”

“I’ll see you later, then.”

She went over him and leaning over, she kissed him on his lips. “Try not to miss me too much.”

He smiled. “I’ll try.”

She grabbed her handbag and let herself out of the apartment. When, she was gone, Max continued reading the newspaper.

Moments later, he closed and folded the newspaper. He laid it on top of the table, finished his tea and got up from the sofa. After rinsing the cup, he went into the bedroom and got his cell. He went back into the kitchen where he called Jabulani on What’s APP. They spoke for two hours and then, it was time for him to prepare lunch so that it was ready by the time Avianna returned. It had been a while since he had the time to cook anything so, this was a nice change too.
