The Word Gave Life

In Him was life, and the life was the light of mankind – John 1:4, MEV

In Jesus is spiritual life and through Him it shines forth as a light in a world full of darkness so that men who are drawn to it (the light), may also part take of it through the Holy Spirit Whom Jesus imparts to them.

Think of when you turn out the light and the room is plunged in darkness. Even as your eyes adjust to the darkness and you can see well enough to find your way, it feels better being in the light, doesn’t it? When there’s light, you don’t feel unsure and vulnerable. You don’t feel as if there’s something lurking there which you cannot see. That’s how it feels with darkness. Sometimes, darkness feels heavy, oppressive. When we have light, we feel secure, confident and sure footed. We don’t stumble or feel our way. We don’t take hesitant steps.

Jesus said, During the day people can walk safely. They can see because they have the light of this world.  But at night there is danger of stumbling because they have no light” (John 11:9, 10, NLT). Darkness is like night and day is light. During the day, we don’t have to worry about stumbling because we can see clearly. Jesus came into the world so that we can see clearly and not stumble around in the darkness anymore.

In spiritual darkness, a person doesn’t see anything wrong with hating their neighbor or gossiping or stealing–all the things which God tells us not to do in His Word. These are the things which cause people to stumble. They don’t even know that they are in darkness–that they are in the wrong. This is the deceitfulness of darkness. Jesus taught, “For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God” (John 3:20, 21, NKJV).

Sin plunges us into darkness. The world was in darkness because of sin. Then, Jesus, our Light came into the world so that men would be drawn to Him and leave the darkness which had permeated their lives. He brought light and life to a dark and dying world.

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 12:46, NKJV). Today, seek Jesus, the Light who can free you from the snare of darkness. “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed” (John 8:36, NKJV).
