Our Value

What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than the angels, And You have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet – Psalm 8:4-6, NKJV

When gazing at the heavens, the work of God’s hands, the moon and the stars which He established—he couldn’t help but wonder what it was about man that the Almighty would take notice of him or pay attention to him. “What’s so special about mankind?” is what he was basically asking God who had created so many other amazing things such as angels.

Do you sometimes wonder why you hold such a special place in God’s heart? Do you wonder what He sees in us, fallen humanity? Well, here are some Bible verses which will explain why we are so precious to Him:

  1. Genesis 1:26, 27Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. We are the only creation God made with His hands and in His likeness. That says a lot, doesn’t it?
  2. Isaiah 49:15“Can a woman forget her nursing child, And not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, Yet I will not forget you.” Can you imagine a mother forgetting her nursing child or not having compassion for the child she’s carrying? Even if these things are possible for a mother, it isn’t so with God who will never forget us.
  3. Psalm 27:10 says, “When my father and my mother forsake me, Then the Lord will take care of me.” Even if our parents were to forsake us, God will not. He will take their place.
  4. Jeremiah 29:11“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” This is my favorite Bible verse. It reminds me that God loves me and wants the absolute best for me. Most parents want what is best for their children and to provide them with everything they need to have a good life and future.
  5. Jeremiah 31:3“Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.” Imagine God loving you for such a long time.
  6. Romans 5:8 – “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Imagine God that God loved us so much that He allowed His precious Son to die for us even before we repented of our sins.
  7. 1 Peter 1:18, 19“…knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” A lot of value is placed on things like silver and gold but they pale in comparison to the precious blood of our Lord and Savior. His blood was God’s price for our salvation. It was the highest price our Father could ever pay.
  8. 1 John 3:1“Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!” God sees us, His creation, as His children upon whom He has poured out His love.
  9. John 3:16-17“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” John 3:16 is one of the most well known Bible verses. Simply put, God loved us so much that He sacrificed His Son so that whoever believes in Him will have eternal life. God didn’t send Jesus to condemn us but to save us through Him. The fact that God went to such lengths to secure our salvation, speaks volumes of His love for us and of our value to Him.

There are many other Bible verses which speak of why we are of such great value to God. He put a lot of thought when He created us. In love, He fashioned us, making each of us unique and special.

I’m amazed when I see people of all shapes and sizes. Sometimes, I can’t help but marvel at the color of their eyes or their hair. We’re different but we were all made in His image. And while others might not see our value, God does. He created all of us and for different reasons. When we look at each other or ourselves, let us look past race, gender, disabilities, mental illness and other things that might cause biases and look at each other through God’s eyes.
