I am Irene of Athens. From 797-802, I ruled the Byzantine Empire. My husband was Emperor Leo IV and after his death, I became guardian of our 10-year-old son, Constantine VI and co-emperor with him.
When he was older, my son’s attempt to seize power was crushed by me. He banished me from court but I returned and was co-ruler again. Later, at my orders, he was arrested and blinded.
