It was their first night in Bora Bora. They were staying in a beach villa at the Bora Bora Pearl Beach Resort with its private garden with private plunge pool. The comfortable living room opened onto the beach and they had dazzling views of the lagoon and the majestic Mount Otemanu. The bedroom was very spacious. There were roses on the bed and written on the bed runner was the word, “Maeva”.
“How lovely,” Martina exclaimed. “Do you think Maeva means, welcome?”
Laird nodded. “Yes, I do.”
“What a lovely villa this is. It’s perfect. Look at those views.”
“Yes, they’re very breathtaking,” Laird agreed. “But, they pale in comparison to you.” He pulled her back against him and buried his face in her hair.
She smiled. “Isn’t it great that we have our own private pool which means we can skinny dip before we go for dinner.”
“I love the way you think, Mrs. Pendlebury.”
She laughed. “Why don’t we change into our swim wear and go for a walk on the beach before taking a dip in the ocean?”
“Sounds like a good idea but, there’s something else I would like us to do first.” He turned her around to face him and pulling her against him, he kissed her. She wrapped her arms around his waist and kissed him back.
Two hours later, they were walking hand in hand on the beach, admiring the peaceful and tranquil surroundings. They stopped to take photos of each other and Mount Otemanu as it rose silently above the lagoon. While Laird took the photos of the peak, Martina said, “I read on Google that Mount Otemanu is the remnant of an ancient volcano. It’s the highest point of the island and rises about 2400 feet above the lagoon. It’s an important elevation point on the island because from the top you can see for miles and miles and during World War II, the island was chosen to be a United States refueling base. Mount Otemanu provided a high vantage point for them to place large cannons and radar equipment which turned out to be very effective.”
“You can see Mount Otemanu from any spot on Bora Bora. It’s is a very popular hiking destination. You can hike only to the base and they recommend that you get a local guide to help you. The summit is impossible to reach because of the fragile volcanic rock which they say is unable to support the weight of an average human. Still, these setbacks don’t stop people from trying.”
“I think a hike to the base would be more than good enough. We can admire it from there and take photos.”
“Would you like to go on a tour of Bora Bora?” he asked.
“Yes, that would be nice.”
“This evening before we go to dinner, I’ll inquire at the front desk.”
“Let’s go for that swim now. The water looks very inviting.”
“All right. I’ll race you.” He quickly put the camera in the sand and took off towards the water. Laughing, she followed him into the turquoise lagoon.
The hotel had three restaurants. On the first night, they chose the Otemanu Restaurant which was at the highest elevation point at the resort. There, they enjoyed international cuisine with a French-Polynesian touch. The waiter was very friendly and he suggested that they go again the following day which was Monday so that they could enjoy a vibrant live Polynesian show.
After dinner, they went to The Uaina Bar where they each enjoyed a digestive and a breathtaking view of Mount Otemanu. It was after mid-night when they returned to their villa. The following morning, they had breakfast at the Otemanu Restaurant. Then, they spent all day by the pool. On Tuesday, they went on the Bora Bora Off-Road Sightseeing Tour. It was three hours long but it didn’t seem so at all.
They were totally immersed in the sights of the island’s culture, history, flora, and fauna. There were the ancient temples of the great Tahitian seafaring society built around 1000 A.D, along with their legends. It was a treat for them to explore the WWII sites built by Americans during their friendly take over of the island in 1942. They visited Faanui Valley where there were small fruit plantations, Pareu, a locally-owned family workshop where they show them how they made beautiful tie-dye Sarongs. They even learned how to make coconut oil and taste local fruits before the tour ended. The tour was done in English. It was well worth the money.
On Wednesday, they spent all morning on the beach. At two, they had lunch at Miki Miki Restaurant which was located near the pool. They both had the grilled fish. After lunch, they returned to the beach. That night, they enjoyed a three-course dinner and champagne in their gazebo while enjoying the beautiful starry night.
The next few days they went on a snorkeling tours, to a beach picnic, scuba diving, jet skiiing and had a blast doing stand up paddle boarding. On Sunday night, their last night on the island, they had dinner on the beach. It was a three-course gourmet dinner with a bottle of red. “This is so romantic,” Martina remarked, wishing that the night wouldn’t end or that they could stay there forever. It felt really wonderful having him all to herself.
“Yes, it is,” he agreed as he gazed at her over his glass of wine. He wished they didn’t have to go back to England. He wished that he could remain in this paradise with her for the rest of their lives. “I feel as if we’re the only two people in the world here.”
“Me too.” The table was elegantly decorated. There were what looked like torches burning and the sky was like a watercolor painting with splashes of blue, crimson, orange and yellow. It was breathtaking. And below it was Mount Otemanu, silent and imposing as it loomed over the shimmering lagoon. In the distance music was playing. She had the waiter take photos of Laird and her. They told him that they were newlyweds and when they returned to their villa, they were pleasantly surprised to find scented flowers and stunning floral arrangements in every room.
“Wow,” Martina exclaimed as she plucked one of the flowers and breathed in its scent.
“This was very thoughtful of them,” Laird said. He removed his jacket and laid it on the back of the chair.
Martina went into the bathroom to brush and get ready for bed. When she emerged, Laird was wearing just his undershirt and boxers. While he was in the bathroom, she quickly took off her dress, set it aside, got on top of the bed and waited for him.

Laird’s heart skipped a beat when he saw her lying there on top of the sheets wearing only her bra and underwear. She looked lovely and luscious. He quickly rid himself of the undershirt and boxers and strode naked over to the bed. He rolled her unto her back and when she opened her legs, he moved between them and lay on top of her. She reached up and pulled his head down so that they could kiss.
For several minutes, they exchanged passionate kisses and then, he drew back to drag off her bra and underwear. He entered her and she grunted. She wrapped her legs around him, clinging to his arms as he began to move his hips, her eyes closed and her lips parted as she savored the moment.
When the lovemaking was over, they lay there, spent. He had his head resting on her heaving bosom and his arm flung across her while she had her arms around him. “I wish we didn’t have to leave this place,” she murmured.
“Me too.”
“I think for our first anniversary that we should come here again.”
“So do I.”
Minutes later, they fell asleep.
