He was on his way home from the courthouse when he spotted Kalisha. She was coming out of a coffee shop. He debated whether or not to approach her. After finding out about her relationship with Professor Warren, he wasn’t sure that he wanted to speak to her. It disgusted him that she would have sex with a man his age.
Too late. Kalisha saw him. He couldn’t ignore her now. Grimacing, he walked over to her and when he reached her, he closed the umbrella. It was just drizzling now. This was the first time since they had broken up that they were seeing each other. She hadn’t changed much over the five years.
“Hello, Brody,” she said when he was standing in front of her on the sidewalk.
“You’re a lawyer now.”
“Yes. I guess you found that out from Professor Warren.”
“Thank you. Did he tell you that I went to see him?”
“Yes, he did. Why did you do it, Brody?”
“I had to.”
“Why? Why did you think you had to go to his office and insult him?”
“I didn’t insult him. I merely pointed out the facts to him.”
“He’s thirty years older than you, Kalisha.”
“So what? The man is old enough to be your father.”
“Everyone keeps telling us that. I don’t give a damn about his age. I love him and he loves me. Why can’t people understand that and just leave us the hell alone?”
“What about when he’s in his seventies? You’ll only be in your forties. Are you seriously trying to tell me that the age difference still wouldn’t matter then?”
“It doesn’t matter now and it wouldn’t matter then.”
“Tell me something, Kalisha and I want you to be honest with me.”
“All right, what do you want to know?”
“Were you seeing him while we were together?”
“No. And I’m sure he told you the same thing.”
“Yes, he did but I didn’t believe him.”
“Why not? It’s the truth. We didn’t get together until two months after you and I broke up.”
“You didn’t waste any time, did you? Tell me, how soon after you and he got together did you start sleeping with him?”
“That’s none of your damned business.”
“All those times when you and I were having sex, were you thinking about him? Were you imagining that it was he who was in bed with you?”
“What kind of a woman do you think I am?”
“I honestly don’t know. I never thought you would end up with a man in his fifties.”
“That’s what’s got you so bent out of shape, isn’t it? You hate the fact that I ended up falling in love with him. If it had been some other guy–a guy in his twenties or thirties, you wouldn’t have a problem but because it’s a mature man, you’re ticked off.”
“Yes, to be brutally honest, it disgusts me that you would prefer to be with an old man like him instead of…”
“Instead of you, Brody?”
He flushed. “No, not me, necessarily but someone closer to your age.”
“Well, I’m not going to justify myself to you or to anyone else. I’m in love with Professor Warren and I’m going to marry him.”
Brody stared at her. “You’re going to marry him?”
“Yes, we’re engaged.” She showed him the ring. “The wedding is in December.”
When his gaze returned to her face, his expression was drawn. “I guess there’s nothing more to say,” he said.
“I guess not,” she said.
“Goodbye, Kalisha,” he said before turning and abruptly walking away.
