It was Melania’s birthday and Matt was taking her out for wings to celebrate. He couldn’t wait to see her and to give her the birthday gift he had picked up at Yorkdale Mall on Civic Holiday.
“How has your day been so far?” he asked when he called her to let her know that he was on his way.
“It has been great. I spoke to my parents and yours, Aunt Kira and Uncle Joel. Aunt Kira said she baked a cake for me and said that she and Uncle Joel will be stopping by later. Would you like to join us?”
“Sure. I’ll be at your place in half-hour.”
“All right. I’ll see you then.”
He ended the call. She sounded very excited. He wished he could take her out for a nice, fancy dinner and perhaps dancing afterwards but he remembered what his mother said. He and Mel had to be careful. He couldn’t afford to give Gina any ammunition which could jeopardize his custody rights. Wings and maybe go for a drive afterwards would have to do.
When he got to her building, he went upstairs. Standing outside her door, he hid the gift behind his back and rang the bell. She opened right away, beaming up at him. She looked great in the off the shoulder black top and jeans. “Hi,”.
“Hi.” He leaned over and kissed her on the cheek. She smelled really good. “Happy birthday, Mel.” He held out the gift.
She took it. “May I open it now?”
“Sure.” He stepped inside and closed the door behind him. She read the card first. “I love the card.” She eagerly ripped off the paper and her eyes widened when she saw the Pandora Moments Heart Closure Snake Chain Bracelet. “Oh, Matt. This is lovely.”
He smiled. “I’m happy you like it.”
“Like it? I love it. I’m going to put it on right now.”
He helped her to put it on. “It looks perfect on you.”
“It does. Thank you, Matt.” She reached up and pulling his head down, she kissed him on the cheek. “Let me quickly go and put this paper in the trash.”
Soon they were on their way. “I was thinking that after we have the wings, we can go for a drive or something.”
“That would be nice. So, where are we going for wings?”
“We’re going to Crave Wings on Eglinton Avenue West.”
“I’ve never heard of the place.”
“A co-worker of mine told me about it. He said that they have a great selection of wings and fries. He told me that it’s the place he goes to for both.”
“I’m looking forward to it. Thanks for taking me out for my birthday.”
“You’re welcome. I wish I could take you somewhere fancy.”
“Wings and fries are just what I need. It’s nice not having to get all dressed up. And it would be fun eating with our fingers.”
He chuckled. “Yes, it would be.”
“So, how was your week?”
“Busy as usual. I’m always thankful for the weekend. How was your week?”
“It was fine. It felt nice not going into today, though. I slept in and watched television while I had breakfast.”
“You took the day off, then?”
“Yes, I always take my birthday when it falls on a weekday.”
“Good for you. Maybe I should start doing that too.”
The traffic wasn’t bad because rush hour was over. He parked the car and they walked to the place. “Your co-worker was right,” Melania said. “There are so many choices. I would love to try them all. Hmm. I’m going to try the Honey Jerk and the Mexican Style Fries.”
“And I’ll try the Cheesy Pepperoni Fries and the Texas Creole wings.”
“Wow, these are so good,” Melania marveled when they dug into the wings and fries.
“Yes, they are. Would you like to try my wings and fries?”
“Sure. And here, try mine.”
“Yours are delicious. Maybe I will have them the next time.”
“And maybe I’ll have yours the next time.”
“So, it’s settled then. You and I are going to come here again?”
The time went by so quickly. Soon, they were on their way back to her place. “I’m sorry we didn’t get a chance to go for that drive,” Matt apologized.
“That’s all right. We’ll do it another time. Aunt Kira and Uncle Joel said that they were stopping by at nine-thirty. It’s now nine.”
“We’ll get there before.”
They got there around 9:15 and after he parked the car in the spot assigned for her even though she didn’t have a car and they walked to through the garage towards to the exit. They kept to the side as cars came and went. It was Friday night, so people were in and out.
Before they went into the building, she stopped and turned to him. “Matt, I had a wonderful time. Thank you for the gift, the card, the wings and the fries. This has been the best birthday I’ve ever had.”
“I’m really happy to hear that,” he said quietly, his eyes restless on her face. For a maddening moment, he wanted to take her in his arms and kiss her. He shifted his weight as he felt himself become aroused. “I had a great time too.”
She wished that he would take her in his arms and kiss her. Her mouth tingled at the thought and her body reacted too. It wasn’t going to happen, of course, not as long as he and Gina were still married. Leaning away from the wall, she said, “Let’s go and have some birthday cake.”
