After withdrawing money from the bank machine, Laird was on his way to Amrutha Lounge where he was having lunch with Bradley and other friends and colleagues when he spotted Antonia coming towards him. Grimacing, he stood there, hands in pockets as he waited for her to reach him. It was just his bloody luck to run into her. For Martina’s sake, he was going to be civil.
“Hello, Laird,” she said, smiling tremulously. How she longed to hug him but she knew that he wouldn’t want her to do that at all.
“I-I didn’t expect to run into you.”
“I didn’t expect to run into you either.”
“I–I was on my way to the gym but I had to stop at the bank first. What about you?”
“I’m having lunch with some friends.”
“Oh. I–I was wondering if you and I could have lunch together some time.”
He wanted to flatly refuse her invitation. How could he bring himself to have lunch with someone he despised? Then, it was as if he heard the Holy Spirit say to him, ‘For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.’
She stood there, watching him, her heart racing. He was probably going to turn her down.
“All right,” he said. “I will have lunch with you.”
It took a moment for her to recover from her shock. “Call me and-and let me know when would be a convenient day and time for you.”
“I have to go now.”
“All right. Enjoy your lunch.”
“Thank you. Goodbye.”
He walked past her to where his car was parked. She stood there and watched him drive away. Then, she went into the bank to deposit money.
When she came out, she leaned against the side of the building, her mind still reeling from the fact that she was going to have lunch with Laird, after all these years. She hoped that he wouldn’t change his mind but she remembered that he was always a man of his word.
Her heart leapt at the thought of seeing him again and sitting across from him as they had lunch at a nice, cozy restaurant. She couldn’t wait for him to call to say when he would be available. Smiling, she moved away from the wall and hurried to her car. She drove to the gym and had a great workout.
On her way home, she stopped by a boutique to find something she could wear on her lunch date with Laird. She wanted to look beautiful for him.
On his way to the restaurant, Laird called Martina to tell he that he had run into Antonia and that he had accepted her lunch invitation. As he expected, she was surprised but, very pleased. “It’s a step in the right direction,” she told him.
“I suppose so. I’ll see you later.”
“Have fun with the guys. Say hello to Bradley for me.”
“I will.” He ended the call. I would rather have fun with you, he thought with a smile.
