From the Movies to the Monastery

She was the pretty blonde in the movie, Where the Boys Are. In five years she made ten films, starring opposite Stephen Boyd, Montgomery Clift, George Hamilton and Robert Wagner following her debut film, Loving You with Elvis Presley. The two teamed up again for King Creole. By the early 1960s, Dolores was an established leading lady. So, how did she go from kissing Elvis Presley to becoming a nun?

“It was not a lifelong dream. I did not grow up wanting to be a nun. I wanted to be an actress. If it had ever been suggested I would one day be a nun, it would have been the last thing on my mind. It was a million to one shot I would ever be a nun.“

It was when she was working on the film, Francis of Assisi in Rome, she met Pope John XXIII was instrumental in her vocation. At the age of 24, Dolores left the film industry to answer the call she had been struggling with.

After 43 years in the monastery, Dolores visited Hollywood to raise awareness for idiopathic peripheral neuropathy disorder, a neurological disorder that afflicts her and many Americans. In April 2006 she testified at Washington congressional hearing on the need for research on the painful and crippling condition.

Although she left Holly-wood to serve God, she still has a connection to the place. “I never felt I was ‘walking away from Hollywood’. I felt I was walking into something more significant and by that, I took Hollywood with me.”

  1. Wow!!! 😮 What a transformation!
Sometimes achieving your dreams early frees you to pursue or become what you were really meant to be.
Our dreams and our divine purpose often clash. Many had to pick one and never be the other.
She had the opportunity to have both separately.
Fulfilled and enjoyed her dreams while it lasted, at such a young age! Before yielding to what she felted “called” to do.
    Wow!
    Thank you for sharing. 💐💜
