My Math Tutor

“Kelsey, instead of buying the Mastering Math software, why don’t you ask Kevin to help you? He’s a whiz at Math.”

“Are you sure he’s going to want to help me?”

“Why wouldn’t he? And please don’t tell me that it’s because you’re African-American and he’s Asian.”

“No, of course not. I never once thought about our differences.”

“He’s a nice guy. He will help you if you ask him.”

“All right. I’ll ask him after our next History class.”

Joanie smiled. “Good.”

“Does he have a girlfriend?”

“Who, Kevin?”

“Yes.”

“Oh, I don’t know but, I could find out if you like.”

“I think he’s cute.”

“And what if it turns out that he does have a girlfriend? Are you going to use that as an excuse not to ask him to help you with Math?”

“No. I really need help and if he’s the one to help me, then…”

“Okay. I’ll find out for you and text you as soon as I can but make sure you speak to him today.”

“Don’t worry. I will.”

“I know you, Kel. You’re always putting things off.”

“I know, I know but I promise, this time, I won’t.”

“Okay. We’d better head inside, break time is almost over.”

They entered the school just as the bell rang and they headed to their classes. As soon as she walked into the History class, her eyes alighted on Kevin. He was always there early. Their eyes met and then, she turned away. She went to her desk and sat down.

As soon as class was over, she quickly shoved her textbook and notebook into her knapsack and went over to Kevin who seemed surprised to see her standing in front of his desk. “Kevin, I-I have a huge favor to ask you,” she said.

He stood up. He was very tall. “What’s the favor?” he asked.

“I’m struggling with Math and-and was wondering–well, if you’d be willing to-to tutor me, if you’re not busy and-and if won’t be a problem for you, of course.”

“Sure, I can help you out and it’s not a problem.”

After she recovered from her surprise and delight, she said, “Thanks, Kevin. I really appreciate this.”

“We can go to the park and find a bench in a quiet spot after school.”

“Sure. That sounds good.”

“Would this afternoon work for you?”

“Sure, it would.”

He smiled. “Great. I’ll meet you at the front entrance after school.”

“Sure. See you then.” She hurried out of the classroom. On her way to her next class, she got a text from Joanie. Good news. Kevin doesn’t have a girlfriend.

Samia grinned from ear to ear. Great! Thanks for finding out. Call you later.

Ok.

Kevin finished putting his books in his satchel and headed for his next class. When he got there and as soon as he sat down, he took out his cell and texted his best friend, Thomas. Guess what? I’m meeting Samia after class today.

Good for you. She’s hot.

Yes! I’m going to ask her to go to the Spring dance with me.

Way to go, Dude.

Kevin smiled. Later, Dude.

Later.

By the time Kevin was done tutoring Samia, she was acing her Math tests and they were dating.
