The Third Wheel

Livia watched Darren and his girlfriend, Judi. It felt like someone had plunged a knife into her heart and was twisting it round and round. Agitated, she got up and walked over to the bar. She slid onto the stool and ordered a virgin Pena Colada. She sat with her back turned to the couple but she could still envision Judi laughing, her arms wrapped around his waist as they slow-danced to the music.

Why on earth did she let him talk her into coming tonight? What was the purpose? Was it to rub her face in the fact that she could never have him? Was it to remind her that she wasn’t his type and that friends were all they could be? She felt like leaving after she finished her drink.

And what did he see in Judi? Granted, she was very pretty and personable. She had perfect white teeth and bouncy golden shoulder length hair. She could have been a model for Colgate or Pantene. Still, for all of her looks and personality, what did she and Darren really have in common? Were they compatible? Darren’s mother wasn’t keen on their relationship and it wasn’t because Judi was white. “Judi is a very sweet girl but I just don’t think that she and Darren are right for each other,” she said to Livia one afternoon when Livia had dropped by for a visit.

“But they love each other, don’t they?” Livia interjected, although it pained her to say that. The last thing she wanted to do was to acknowledge that Darren was in love with another woman.

“I’m convinced that Judi loves him, but I’m not convinced that he loves her.”

It surprised Livia to hear her say that. “But, I can’t imagine that Darren would stay in a relationship with a woman he doesn’t love.”

“Maybe, he hadn’t realized it as yet but when he does, I’m sure that he will do the decent thing and end the relationship.”

Livia wasn’t convinced and seeing them together tonight, so cozy, she couldn’t help feeling that his mother was wrong about the whole thing although she wished with all her heart that she was right and that Darren would come to his senses and break up with Judi. And then, what? You’re kidding yourself if you think that he will hook up with you. It’s time you accepted the true, hard fact that there isn’t a future for you with him and moved on. Check out that good-looking brother who is staring at you, why not give him a little smile and that would be his cue to join you?

Livia ignored the thoughts in her head and turned so that she was backing the guy, making it clear that she wasn’t interested. And there, she sat, looking at the man she was interested in with his girlfriend. It was the same old situation–her watching him with another woman, her heart aching. She couldn’t stand this any longer. She quickly finished her drink. She said to the bartender, would you tell the couple I came with that I had to leave?”

He nodded. “Sure.”

“Thanks.” She slid off the stool and left without a backward glance.

She hailed a cab and went straight home. After she stripped, she took a quick shower and put on her new silk negligee. She turned on the television and watched old classic movies. She tried to push all thoughts of Darren and his girlfriend from her mind. Never again would she go anywhere with them. Tonight, she felt like a third wheel.

It was after ten when she was in the middle of watching a Miss Marple Mystery when the door-bell rang. She got up, wondering who it was coming by her place at this hour. Her heart lurched when she looked through the keyhole. She wished she had time to go and put on her robe. She opened the door.

Her body responded to the way Darren’s gaze traveled over it. “What are you doing here?” she asked.

“May I come in?” he asked.

She stepped aside for him to go in and then shut the door. Facing him, she asked again, “What are you doing here? I thought you would still be at the club with Judi.”

“No. We left shortly after you did. I saw you leave the bar but I thought you had gone to the washroom. When you didn’t come back, I went over to bar and the bartender gave me your message. Why did you leave without saying goodbye?”

“I-I didn’t want to interrupt your dance.”

“That would have been better than you just leaving without a word. And you left before I had a chance to dance with you.”

“I’m not sure that would have been a good idea.”

“Why not?”

She was beginning to feel flustered. “I-I don’t know. I just don’t think it would have been a good idea, that’s all.”

“Livia, are you sorry you came out with us tonight?”

“Yes. I felt like a third wheel. It should have been just the two of you.”

“Well, actually, it was supposed to be four of us.”

Four of us? You, Judi, me and who else?”

“Your date.”

My date!”

He raised his hands. “Judi’s idea, not mine. After I told her that I had invited you to join us, she thought that it would be nice for you to have a date.”

“What happened to my date?”

“He called to say that something had come up and he couldn’t make it.”

“Why didn’t you tell me about him when we spoke on the phone?”

“I wasn’t sure that you would have liked the idea of a blind date. And I guess I was afraid that you would change your mind about coming with us.”

“You’re right, I wouldn’t have been thrilled about the idea of a blind date but it would have been better than me tagging along with you and Judi, feeling like a third wheel.”

“I’m sorry.”

She wrapped her arms about herself, self-consciously. “I-I should put my robe on.” She was about to walk past him when he stepped in front of her, barring her way. Heart pounding she gazed up at him and what she saw on his face, make her mouth dry and her body yearn for him.

“No, don’t put anything on,” he said huskily. “Don’t hide your beautiful body.”

He thought she had a beautiful body.

She trembled now as he leaned over and kissed her on the shoulder. She closed her eyes when she felt his lips caress the skin before he pulled down the negligee until it was about her waist, exposing her heaving bosom. Then, he got down on his knees and wrapping his arms about her waist, he pulled her against him and buried his face between her breasts before he took each one in his mouth.

Moaning, she reached up and clutched his head, holding it there against her. Waves of pleasure washed over her. Her knees felt weak. If it weren’t for his arms about her, her legs would have buckled under her. The ecstasy lasted for several minutes and then, breathing harshly, he raised his head and asked, “Where’s your bedroom?”

“Down the hall, last door on the right,” she managed to say in between breaths.

Raising swiftly to his feet, he scooped her up in his arms and carried her to her room. When they got there, their clothes were quickly discarded and then they were kissing wildly. All thoughts of his relationship with Judi went clean out of her mind. All she could think about was how good his naked body felt against hers. She cupped his face between her hands as they exchanged passionate kisses before pushing him down onto the bed. She lay down beside him, on her left side, facing him. They were both breathing heavily. He was looking up at her, his eyes filled with desire.

He sucked in his breath sharply when she ran her fingers eagerly down the length of his torso. He closed his eyes, moaning as she covered every area of him with kisses, driving him mad. Then, he rolled over so that she was underneath him and entered her, making her grunt. The lovemaking was vigorous and explosive.
