“What are you all staring at?” Ian asked.
“This.” Jenn pointed.
“A piece of string?”
“That’s not just a piece of string. Look at its shape.”
“The infinity sign.”
“That’s what I said,” Jenn gloated.
“It looks like the number 8 to me,” Claire said.
“It can be both,” Mark declared.
“The number 8 looks like the infinity sign on its side,” Ian volunteered.
“In Christianity, 8 means new beginning,” Mark remarked.
Chuck laughed.
“What’s so funny?” Claire asked him.
“That’s one of the laces from my runners. I removed it yesterday because it was busted. I dropped it there.”

So many messages from a shoelace!!

Exactly! Sometimes, people see more than what’s really there. I think Ian was the one who saw the lace for what it was truly until he was persuaded otherwise.

Dear Adele,
As Thoreau said, “It’s not what you look at that matters. It’s what you see.” 😉 Nicely done.

Ha ha, it’s what we’ve all been staring at, trying to figure out what it means. Good story. 🙂

Yes, I can just imagine them standing around the lace, trying to figure out what it meant and coming up with their own ideas. That’s why Chuck got such a kick out of that. Thanks, JWD 🙂

Another good quote. Sometimes, they are what exactly what they are and not what we imagine or perceive them to be.

I prefer that most of the time. The other can sometimes lead a person off the path.

You’re so right. And that’s what happened to Ian. He saw what the lace for what it was until Jenn led him down a different path.

Tut-tut Chuck, fancy leaving your litter on the pavement! Pleased he did though ‘cos it led to an amusing story!

Chuck’s probably pleased that he left his litter there too. He got a kick out of seeing his friends make a big fuss over it.

Yes, we believe what we want to believe. We see what we want to see. If only we understood what is staring us in the face.

Signs can be interpreted in many ways. The revelation that it was his shoelace must have been disappointing. Well done!

Yes, they can be. And I’m sure that they were very disappointed that it was just a shoelace. Thanks, Brenda 🙂

Thanks, J.A. Am happy you thought it was fun. It like a lace arranged to look like the infinity sign 🙂

It can be so funny how we find symbolism in everything.
