Doing Your Pleasure

“So, how is that gorgeous husband of yours?”

“He’s fine, thanks. These are from him.”

“What lovely flowers. What’s the occasion?”

“No occasion. He likes to send me flowers once a month.”

“Oh, how sweet. You’re so blessed to have such a great man.”

“Yes, I am. Diana, I need to talk to you about something very personal.”

“Sure. It’s now eleven. How about we have lunch in my office in an hour and we talk then?”

“Okay. Thanks, Diana.”

After she put the flowers in a vase and on her desk, she returned to her work. At precisely, twelve, she was in Diana’s office with the door closed. They were sitting around a table in the corner by the window. After Diana prayed, she inquired, “So, what would you like to talk to me about?”

“Diana, is it a sin to have sex on Sabbath? Every Friday night, Joel wants to have sex. He says that at the end of a long work week, he likes to relax and sex is a part of his Sabbath rest. I remind him of the fourth commandment that we shouldn’t do any work and of where it says in the book of Isaiah that we should not do our own pleasure on the Sabbath. We’ve argued about it and I’m afraid that it will affect our marriage if it isn’t resolved. What do you think?”

“When the fourth commandment talks about not doing any work, it was referring to secular work, not sex. Sex shouldn’t be work. It should be a joyful act between a husband and wife. Sex is a gift from God and there’s nothing wrong with Joel and you enjoying this gift. It is just another way of expressing your love. Verse 13 in that chapter of Isaiah says that the Sabbath should be a delight. The Jews who were the first Sabbath-keepers regarded Sabbath sex as a mitzvah, a blessing or good act.  For them, sexual relations are considered a dimension of Sabbath pleasure.”

“So, what you’re basically saying that it isn’t wrong for a husband and wife to have sex on the Sabbath.”

“No, it isn’t. Gavin and I do. Of course, you shouldn’t let Joel pressure you into having sex on the Sabbath if you feel very strongly about it but don’t say that the Bible prohibits it because that isn’t true. I hope that the two of you will find a solution which will work for both of you.”

“Thanks, Diana. It’s a lot to think about.”

“Pray about it.”

“I will.”

That afternoon, as soon as she got home, she went upstairs and into the bedroom to pray. When she was finished, she got dinner ready. Joel hadn’t come home as yet. As she was fussing about in the kitchen, these words came to her, “The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise, the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.  Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer. Then come together again, so that Satan does not tempt you for lack of self-control.” She knew that was the answer to her prayer and she knew what she was going to do.

When Joel got home, after they kissed and welcomed in the Sabbath, they ate their dinner at the kitchen table.

“How was your day?” she asked him.

“Busy as usual. I’m so thankful that it’s the Sabbath. How was your day?”

“I was busy too. Thanks for the flowers. They were so beautiful.”

He smiled. “You’re welcome, Honey. Beautiful flowers for my exotic flower.”

She smiled, thinking how blessed she was to have such a wonderful husband. Tonight, she was going to show him just how much she loved and appreciated him. “Honey, when you’ve finished your dinner, take your bath while I wash the dishes. Afterwards, we’ll relax in the living-room.”

“All right.”

Half hour later, they were in the living-room. In the background Bach’s Aria “Bereite dich, Zion” was playing. He was leaning his head against the edge of chair next to the fireplace. She opened his robe, her body responding to his nakedness. She poured some oil on his skin and rubbed it in.

He closed his eyes. “That feels really good,” he murmured. “It’s very relaxing.”

“Good,” she said. This was the first she had ever rubbed oil on his body and wondered why she hadn’t thought of doing it before. It was romantic and sensuous at the same time. She felt his stomach contract when she rubbed the oil in and heard him catch his breath when she spread the oil on the inner parts of his thighs.

When she finished oiling his skin, he started to sit up but she pushed him gently back down. “Don’t get up,” she said.

While he lay there, wondering what was going to happen next, she lowered her head and pressed her lips against the side of his neck before kissing him on his chest which was heaving.

“What are you doing?” he asked breathlessly, his eyes filled with desire when they met hers as she raised her head to look at him.

“I’m making love to my husband,” she replied huskily.

“Are you sure about this?”

“Yes, I am. Now, just lie there and let us both enjoy this Sabbath blessing.”
