“To my eldest son, Jett. I bequeath nothing. And he knows the reason why.”
I couldn’t believe it. My mother had followed through with her threat to disinherit me if I didn’t end my relationship with Evangeline, my African-American girlfriend.
I was hurt, angry but more determined than ever to follow my heart. I wasn’t going to let my mother’s narrow-mindedness, bigotry and spitefulness prevent me from marrying the woman I loved.
I got up and left. A week later, Evangeline and I are honeymooning.

There are families that will never be open-minded. Such a waste.

Such a very sad reality. And you’re right, Dale. It’s such a waste.

Dear Adele,
How sad for the narrow-minded mother. She probably cheated herself out of a relationship with a wonderful daughter-in-law. Well done.

Dear Rochelle,
Yes, it’s such a pity when people allow their prejudice to get the better of them and ruin relationships. Instead of losing a son, she would have gained a daughter-in-law and as you said, enjoyed a wonderful relationship with her. Thanks 🙂
Shalom,
Adele
