One of Them

“How long are you going to be upset with me?”

“I don’t know yet but it’s going to be for a while.”

“But, why? I thought you would be pleased or impressed.”

Pleased? Impressed? You’re crazy if you think I would be either. You were my BFF – Bucket filling friend. We had so many plans. We were going to skydiving, bungee jumping, outdoor rock climbing, fly fishing and caving. What about the exotic places we were going to travel too where we would enjoy the food, culture and the women?”

“I know we had all of these plans but things have changed. This is where I belong.”

“Here?” he exclaimed, glancing around the room with the candles, statues and other religious relics one would find in such a place. It all seemed so dark and oppressive. Why would anyone choose this over adventure and excitement? “Where did you get the crazy idea that this is where you belong?”

“God revealed it to me one morning when I praying. He told me that this was my calling.”

“Are you sure it was God’s voice you heard?”

“Yes. He wants me to serve Him.”

“There are other ways to serve Him, you know. You didn’t have to become one of them.”

“What do you have against priests?”

“Nothing. I just didn’t expect you to become one.”

“I’m sorry to have disappointed you.”

“Now, I’ll have to find a new BFF.”

“I’m sure you won’t have any trouble doing so.”

“Hmmph. Even if I do, you’ll still be in my bad books for a while. This is damned inconvenient, you know.”

“Bernard.”

“Sorry. Now I’m going to have to watch my language when I’m around you. I’m going. No point in sticking around.”

“Don’t be a stranger.”

“I don’t think you’ll be seeing me any time soon. So long, Father.”

“So long, Bernard.” He watched his friend leave, his expression one of sadness. I have lost a good friend but have gained Christ. That thought filled him with peace.
