Aria

Lost among the lilacs, she emerged like a sprite. I half expected to see wings.

I stood transfixed, not daring to move for fear that the vision would dissipate.

She seemed to float rather than walk toward me.

Violet eyes met mine steadily as a slight smile tugged at her mouth. She held out her hand. Tongue-tied, I was about to take it when I noticed that she was holding my wallet.

“I saw when you dropped it back there,” she said. “I followed you so that I could give it back.”

I took it from her. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

“What’s your name?” I asked.

“Aria.”

Somehow the name suited her.

“What’s yours?”

“Decker.”

“Nice to meet you, Decker.”

“Nice to meet you too.”

“Well, it’s time for me to go.”

“Wait!”

“Yes?”

“Have lunch with me.”

“Sorry. I don’t think my boyfriend would like that.”

Crushed, I watched her disappear among the lilacs.
