“Bev, I’ve been meaning to ask you a Bible question.”
“What’s the question?”
“Isn’t Jesus coming secretly? Doesn’t it say in the Bible that there will be two people in a field and one will be taken and the other one left behind?”
“Yes. It does but this is talking about two sets of people. Those who are taken are the saved and those left behind are the lost. In the day of Noah and Lot, there were two sets of people. Those who were in the ark and those who were not. The ones in the ark were saved and those who weren’t were perished in the flood. And in the story of Lot, only three people were saved from the destruction of Sodom. In the last days, there will be those who will be saved and those who will be lost. The people who are saved will be taken to Heaven with Jesus while those left on earth will be destroyed at His coming.”
“But doesn’t the Bible teach that He is coming as a thief?”
“Yes. It says so in 1 Thessalonians 5:2.”
“Well, doesn’t that prove that His Second Coming is in secret? We don’t know when a thief is going to break into our homes, do we or we would put something in place to prevent it.”
“You just hit the nail on the head.”
Julie looked confused. “What do you mean?”
“We don’t know when a thief will break into our homes just like we don’t know when Jesus is coming. He Himself said that He will come at an unexpected hour. So, in that sense He is coming like a thief but it will not be in secret. The Bible is very clear about that. His return will be like lightning flashing in the sky and it will be audible too. It says that He Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of God. It’s a momentous occasion. The righteous dead will be resurrected and caught up to Him in the sky along with the righteous living. No, believe me, the Second Coming will be a secret event. It will be unexpected.”
“I think I understand.”
“When Paul likened Jesus’ Second Coming to a thief in the night, he was warning us to not be caught off guard. Jesus too warned us to be watchful. We should live everyday as if it’s the day He will return. We have to be ready.”
“Thanks, Bev.”
“You’re welcome. So, what are you in the mood for?”
“I’m thinking Thai.”
“Me too!”
Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen – Revelation 1:7
