They met at the bank where she was a bank teller. She wasn’t pretty or even his type but he was immediately attracted to her. He found excuses to go to that particular branch although it was a little out of his way. He had only gone there that first time because he was in the vicinity. He watched her while he was in line, hoping that he would be get her instead of one of the other tellers. Much to his satisfaction, he did and smiling broadly, he walked up to the counter. He stood there looking down at her.
He could tell that she liked what she saw. She couldn’t hide her attraction for him and that thrilled him. She smiled, making his heart skip a beat. “Hello. And how may I help you today, Sir?” To the casual observer, she was all business but the look in her eyes said differently.
He told her that he had a certified cheque to deposit in his account. While she did the transaction, he asked, “What’s your name?”
“I’m Matthias but my friends call me Matt.”
She smiled but didn’t answer but when the transaction was done, she inquired, “Is there anything else I can do for you today, Sir?”
He handed her one of his business cards. “Call me, he said in a low, urgent voice before he raised it to say, “No, that’s all for today, thanks.”
She took it and said, “Have a good day, Sir.”
“Thanks. You too.” He turned and walked out of the bank.
A couple of days later, she called him. “I don’t usually call men I have only met once,” she said.
“Well, I’m happy you called, Jacinta. I would like to take you out for lunch. What would be a good time for you?”
“Okay. Twelve-thirty it is. I’ll come by the bank and pick you up.”
He was very excited when he hung up the phone and he couldn’t wait for the time to come when he would drive over to the bank and pick her up. When it did, he was out of the office in a flash. She was waiting outside of the bank’s entrance for him. His eyes traveled over her as he quickly stepped out of the car to open the passenger’s door for her. She was wearing a red blouse and a knee length black pencil skirt. She had a tiny waist and curvy hips. In short, she had an amazing body.
She self-consciously touched her hair at the sides, something she did when she was nervous as she climbed into the car. She saw the way he stared at her legs before he closed the door. At that point she knew that he was interested in only one thing. It was what most of the men she came into contact wanted but this one was different. She was attracted to him. She made up her mind that she was going to give him what he was after.
They went to a family run Italian restaurant where over tasty Pasta Primavera and Penne all’Arrabbiata, they got to know a little about each other. The hour went quickly and it was time for him to take her back to the bank. When they were in the bank’s parking lot, he asked, “When can I see you again?”
She shrugged. “That’s up to you.”
“All right. Have dinner with me tomorrow night.”
“Sure. Where and what time?”
“Here, write your address on this card.”
She took the card and pen from him and scribbled her address on the back. “What time can I expect you?”
“All right. I’ll see you then. Goodbye.” She pushed open the door before he could get out and hold it open for her and she was gone.
The following night, he showed up at exactly six-thirty. She was waiting outside the entrance of her building for him. He looked really good in the black suit and shirt, no tie. She could tell that he liked the way she looked. The black dress with the spaghetti straps hugged her figure. Her hair framed her face. He reached for her hand and pulled her against him. The desire shone in his eyes and she swallowed hard, her heart pounding wildly in her chest which was heaving. When she saw his eyes lowered to her parted lips, she said, “Not now. Later.”
He nodded and released her hand. “All right.” He held the door open for her. “You look amazing,” he remarked before he closed it and walked around to the driver’s side. He got in behind the wheel and drove out of the parking lot. Fifteen minutes later, they were at a swanky Mediterranean restaurant. It was a very pleasant evening and she truly enjoyed herself. She realized that she liked being with him and that she could end up falling for him too. After dinner, they went for a drive along the coast because it was a beautiful night and then they went to her place.
She barely had time to open the door and close it behind him before he pulled her roughly into his arms to kiss her. Her mind screamed for her to stop before things went too far but her body refused to listen. It was on fire. In less than five minutes, they were in her bedroom where they spent the rest of the night. The next morning when she woke up, she realized that she was alone. He must have left early. She had planned to fix him breakfast. She felt awful. How was she going to be able to go to church and act like nothing was wrong?
Why did she do it? Why didn’t she follow her mind which told her not to go out with him or invite him up to her apartment? Why did she allow her attraction for him to get the better of her? Now she was paying the consequences for that tryst. She wasn’t going to see him again. He had gotten what he wanted. For him, it had been just a “thing”. He wanted to sleep with her and now that he had, there was no reason for him to come around or get in touch with her anymore. What an idiot she had been.
Dejected and frustrated with herself, she dragged herself off to church. And it didn’t help that the sermon that morning was about Glorifying God With My Body. She sat there and squirmed as the minister preached about sexual purity. And when he said, “And based on 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, fornication (which is pre-marital sex) is just as immoral and just as dangerous to our spiritual condition before God as adultery, prostitution and homosexuality (and other forms of extra-marital sex). So the Bible clearly says that pre-marital sex is wrong,” it was like he was speaking directly to her. She left church feeling very convicted and she promised herself that she would never again have sex outside of marriage.
She went straight home, changed and fixed herself something to eat. She sat in the living-room eating while she watched a nature program. After she finished eating and having her lunch, she decided to go for a walk. As she was about to leave the apartment, her phone rang. It was Matt. She was tempted to hang up the phone but didn’t. That wouldn’t be the Christian thing to do. “Hello, Matt.”
“Hi Jacinta, I was wondering if I could see you. May I come over?”
“I don’t think so,” she said. “I was just on my way out.”
“You sound upset. I’m sorry I left without saying goodbye. You were sleeping and I didn’t want to disturb you. I had to leave when I did because my father needed a lift up to the airport. I barely had time to go home and shower before I went to pick him up.”
“May I come over or if you prefer we can meet somewhere. I really need to talk to you.”
“All right. I’m on my way to the park opposite where I live. I’ll meet you at the entrance.”
“I’ll meet you there in about twenty minutes.”
They rang off and ten minutes later, she left the apartment. Five minutes after she got there, he showed up. He was wearing a dark blue sweater and jeans. She couldn’t get over how attractive he was. It was a very mild day, so she wasn’t wearing a jacket. When she saw the way his eyes traveled over her, she touched the side of her head self-consciously thinking that she probably should have worn a different outfit. His expression was serious when he met her gaze. “You look great,” he remarked.
“Thank you. So do you.”
“Jacinta, are you having regrets about last night?”
She lowered her eyes. “Yes.”
He frowned. “But why?”
She looked at him then. “I’m a Christian.”
“So, am I–although I don’t go to church as often as I should. Is that the only reason?”
“I didn’t think that I would hear from you again because I thought that sex was all you wanted from me.”
He dragged his fingers through his hair. “There’s no denying that I’m sexually attracted to you,” he said. “But, it’s much more than that. If I didn’t have to take my father to the airport, I would have stayed. I wanted you to wake up and find me lying there next to you.”
“I would have made you breakfast.”
“And I would have really liked that. Jacinta, I know that what we did last night was wrong because it goes against what is in the Bible but we couldn’t help ourselves. It won’t happen again, I promise. It wouldn’t be easy being with you and not want to make love to you but I will have to exercise self-control.”
“So, what you’re saying is that you want us to continue seeing each other?”
He nodded and reached for her hands, drawing her closer to him. “Yes. I want to be in a relationship with you.”
Her heart was racing now. “That’s what I want too,” she said. She was so relieved that she was wrong about him. This wasn’t just a “thing” for him. He wanted more. He wanted what she wanted.
“Good. We will make sure that we don’t spend any time alone at your place or mine.”
“I think that’s very wise.”
He leaned down and kissed her on the lips, before suggesting, “Let’s go for that walk and talk some more.” Lacing his fingers through hers, they started to make their way into the park.
