“I can’t believe that Luke Perry is dead.”
“Who’s Luke Perry?”
“He was before your time, Andrea. Here’s a photo of him.”
“He’s cute but not as cute as Shawn Mendes.”
“Who’s he?”
Andrea rolled her eyes. “Really, Mom? You don’t know who Shawn Mendes is?”
“No.”
Sigh. “Here’s my wallpaper of him.”
“He’s cute but not as cute as your Dad.”
Andrea stared at her. “Dad? Are you serious?”
“Your father was a hunk.”
Just then, Dave walked in. “Is Mark here? His motorbike’s parked outside.”
Andrea looked at her Dad and burst into laughter.
“What’s so funny?”
“Nothing.”

I was a big fan of Beverly Hills: 90210 and was sorry to hear of Luke Perry’s passing. It was his role as Dylan McKay which made him a teen heartthrob and idol in the 1990s.

OK, Mom, time to pull out the old photos (printed, not digital) and prove it to her 😉

I agree, Trent. Mom needs to show her what she’s talking about 🙂

Nice slice of life. You capture the teenage voice very well.

Thanks 🙂 Teenagers are so interesting. It’s funny how they see us older folks.

Such a shame – and also very realistic, quite a few young people this week who were wondering who he was!

It is a shame. I guess he was before their time.

You’ve hit the Dad daughter relationship on the nose, really perceptive, my daughter is exactly the same, we are made to be chuckled at!!

Thanks, I was hoping that I would. I don’t have a teenager–yet, but I’ve heard stories and watched movies to get an idea of what it’s like having one. They certainly make life very interesting 🙂

Mine is 16b this year and she’s grounded but still thinks I’m a massive idiot… which of course I am!!

Nice way to incorporate current events/pop culture into your writing. I was a 90210 fan, too! I remember piling onto the couch of the sorority house all watching it together (because DVR wasn’t a thing yet!!)

Thanks 🙂 Yes, I remember those days when I used to sit down and get ready to spend an hour watching Brenda, Brendan, Kelly, Steve, Donna, David, Andrea and last, but definitely not least, Dylan.

So well done, Adele… At least I know who BOTH Luke and Shawn are!
I was thrown by the Mark, then realised it didn’t matter 😉

Thanks, Dale 🙂 Mark’s the son. He doesn’t live at home anymore.

I figured he was an “extra” not really necessary to the story 😉

You’re right. He was an extra mentioned only in passing because of the motorbike 🙂

What, old and clueless people like parents were young and hot once? That can’t be true… Great voice, and so true.

Dear Adele,
I never watched Beverly Hills 90210 but I’m no less shocked over Luke Perry’s death. Love the voice of the teenager in this. I laughed out loud with her. Well done.
Shalom,
Rochelle

Generation gap is so beautifully captured. Concept of attractive keeps on changing from generation to generation. Andrea laughed because in her mind David is not a hunk or Mark cannot be here when dad is around? Teenagers can be quirky!

Thanks, Abhijit. You’re right the concept of what’s attractive or cute changes with each generation. And teenagers can be quirky. Mark just stopped by to visit his folks. Dad wasn’t there when he arrived.

It’s so hard for us to think of our parents being young and sexy 🙂 I have to say, though, that I always thought my dad was the handsomest man I knew.

Yes, it is hard to think of our parents like that. Linda, it’s so endearing that you thought your Dad was the handsomest man you knew 🙂

very well done. I could almost see the daughter rolling her eyes at the thought of dad being a hunk!

It was so sad to hear he’d died, wasn’t it? So young too. I liked the conversation between the mum and daughter – very realistic! Nice use of the prompt photograph too

Yes, it so sad that he died and at such a young age. Thanks, Lynn. I had fun with the dialogue 🙂
